Surviving Midterms

Updated: Mar 15, 2021

Midterms are unfortunately upon us. Midterms mean we can't fully enjoy the sunny days happening after so many snow days; we can't be 100% excited for Spring Break because of the impending exams. Here's how I survive midterms without becoming an anxious mess.

How to Organize Your Life

I always begin studying and preparing for midterms about five days before, or the school week before. I write down everything that’s due, note any study sessions or study guides my professors offer, and begin to compile and finish any class notes I may need for the exam.

The week of exams I separate my tasks into what I call “needle movers.” These are things like choosing one exam to study for, choosing one class to catch up on readings, and one paper, if applicable, to begin writing. This week I had three papers due, three exams, and two classes that weren’t administering any sort of exam. Monday I wrote out a schedule for each day of the week and divided my work into my three tasks.

This makes midterms more manageable because it breaks down the mass amount of information I need to know and review and turns it into easy-to-complete to-do list items.

Make Time for Self Care

I’ve made it a habit to set aside two to three nights a week where I give myself an hour to do nothing but self care. This is usually taking a bath and reading a book for an hour, but sometimes it's listening to music and drinking wine.

This habit is so helpful in all aspects of my life, because you can’t be the best you possible if you’re running on fumes. Giving back to yourself is the best act of selfishness you
